The Liminal Zone

Liminal, from the Latin limen, threshold, it describes the disorienting interval between leaving one identity behind and arriving at another. The rules that governed before do not yet apply. The rules that will govern after have not yet formed.
One of my landscape architecture professors returned to this word often when describing design work that flows from the built environment into the natural world — the moment where a designed landscape releases its hold and something else begins. It stayed with me because the coast is a liminal landscape in exactly this sense.
The coast is neither land nor sea. It belongs fully to neither terrestrial or marine systems and is understood by neither discipline in its entirety. The intertidal zone is one of the most biologically productive environments on earth precisely because it sits at the threshold between two regimes. The stress of that position, the constant oscillation between conditions, drives adaptation and ecological complexity that neither purely terrestrial nor purely marine systems generate.
With this article the pivot point of the series, the liminal condition of the coast is not a problem to be resolved. It is the defining design condition. The failure to understand it as such is the source of most of what often goes wrong in coastal resilience practice.
The Disciplinary Problem
Coastal resilience work draws on coastal geomorphology, marine ecology, civil engineering, hydrology, landscape architecture, urban planning, environmental law, and climate science. Each discipline brings essential knowledge. None of them, alone, is adequate to understanding the liminal space known as the coast in its fullness.
What typically happens in practice is that one discipline establishes the primary framework, usually coastal engineering or ecology, and the others contribute within it. The engineering model defines the parameters; the ecologist advises on species selection; the landscape architect addresses aesthetics and access; the planner manages permits. Each does their job. The result is often technically competent and conceptually thin, even pasted together like a collage.
The thinness comes from treating the coast as a problem that belongs to a particular discipline, rather than as a threshold condition that requires a genuinely integrated way of seeing. A coastal engineer optimizing for structural performance under storm loading is working with a fundamentally different model of the shoreline than a marine ecologist mapping intertidal community dynamics. Both models are valid within their domains. Neither captures the threshold of the place where wave energy physics, intertidal biology, tidal chemistry, sediment geomorphology, and human settlement dynamics all interact simultaneously.
Design at the Threshold
Landscape architecture is, among the design disciplines, the one most structurally suited to working at thresholds. It emerged at the boundary between architecture and horticulture, between the built and the natural. Its fundamental unit of analysis, the site, is inherently relational. A site is not a thing; it is a set of conditions and relationships that a design must engage, mediate, and transform over time.
This threshold-oriented way of thinking is exactly what coastal resilience work needs at its center. Not landscape architecture as a service discipline applying planting palettes to shoreline stabilization projects, but landscape architecture as an integrating framework that holds ecology, hydrology, social dynamics, and extended time horizons together in a single design intelligence.
The most important coastal resilience designs I have encountered share a quality that is difficult to name but immediately recognizable: they work with the liminal condition rather than against it. They design for movement, for oscillation, for the dynamic exchange between conditions that is the coast's fundamental nature. A living shoreline that accommodates seasonal variation in marsh platform elevation. A dune system designed to migrate landward as sea level rises. A waterfront public space that treats periodic inundation not as a failure condition but as a designed event, a performance of the threshold rather than a violation of it. The reframing from failure condition to designed event is what separates honest coastal design from coastal design that is merely optimistic.
These designs are not simply more ecologically sensitive than conventional engineering. They are more honest about what the coast is and this helps create a more durable design.
The Cultural Dimension of the Threshold
The liminal condition of the coast is not only physical and ecological. It is cultural. Coastal landscapes have always occupied a particular place in human imagination as edges, as frontiers, as the place where the known, even “controlled” world ends and something else begins. They carry the weight of everything human cultures have projected onto the boundary between land and sea.
The resistance to managed retreat is not simply a failure to understand risk. It is a deeply human attachment to threshold landscapes to living at the edge, to the identity formed by proximity to the ocean, to the community organized around a particular stretch of shore, to the embedded economics of individual and communal decisions. The fishermen, the surfers, the families who have occupied the same beachfront for three generations: their attachment is not irrational. It is a form of knowledge about what that threshold has meant, and a legitimate stake in what it becomes.
Coastal resilience practice that treats this cultural dimension as a communication challenge will continue to fail in the communities where it matters most. The design must engage the cultural meaning of the threshold, not just its physical dynamics. It has to offer a vision of what life at the coast can look like under changed conditions, not just a risk mitigation strategy, but an invitation to a different relationship with the edge.
This is where work remains to be done. The science is advancing. The policy frameworks are slowly adapting. The design vocabulary is expanding. What is still missing is a cultural framework for the coast as a place of managed change, a way of valuing and inhabiting this threshold that is honest about what it is becoming, without surrendering the qualities that have made it worth inhabiting.
That framework will not come from engineering or ecology alone. It will come from practitioners willing to work at the threshold between the technical and the human, just as the coast itself works at the threshold between land and sea.
